Central Park Five event–Today, 10/22!

Please join us for an event focusing on the film the issues that are addressed in the film, The Central Park Five this coming Weds., Oct. 22 from 2:30 to 4 pm in C-459. Please encourage your students to attend—we will pass around a sign in sheet so if you want to give them credit for co-curricular activities, we will have a record of their attendance.

We will show clips from the documentary, The Central Park Five, with commentary from four Social Science faculty. The film is about the five African American young men who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman who had been jogging in Central Park in 1989. The convictions depended on anxieties, hysteria, and false accusations that were whipped up by prominent New Yorkers including members of the police department, as well as then-realtor Donald Trump. The convicted men were ultimately exonerated, but only after serving years in prison.

The faculty who will speak about the film and the events surrounding it are:

Vanessa Bing, Psychology

Charlene Bryant, Criminal Justice,

Karen Miller, History

Adam Thomas, History
